Video: Here’s How the Course Works
Butterfly Course Description
This mini course will provide participants with the resources, tools, and support you need to design, build, and care for a butterfly garden in your space. The course will be delivered live, online in three 90-minute classes via Zoom. Class sessions will be recorded, and you will have access to those recordings for one year. You will be able to ask questions, share ideas, and get help with problem-solving during the course, and after the course by joining our online gardening group.
Participants will learn how to make their new or existing gardens inviting and safe to beneficial insects, especially butterflies and bees.
Course Resources
Participants will gain access to a library of resources organized around:
- Building a knowledge base about pollinators, butterflies, and their needs;
- Building a knowledge base about the species of butterflies in your region;
- Learning how to analyze your site and determine your garden’s assets and constraints; evaluating your existing garden for support for butterflies;
- Identifying host plants and native plants for your region;
- Learning about the new USDA growing zones and what that means for you;
- Container gardening and small-space gardening;
- Gardening on rooftops, patios, and balconies;
- Watering and watering systems;
- Pros and cons of removing caterpillars to enclosures;
- Controlling pests (including mosquitos) without harming pollinators and beneficial insects;
- Registering your garden; and
- Sharing information about butterfly gardening.
Course Structure
The course will be highly interactive—not lecture. You will have opportunities to ask questions, share ideas, and make connections with others in the course along the way, with opportunities for one-on-one consulting as needed.
Course Cost
Course cost is $50 per screen. What that means is that you and a friend or you and your children can participate together around one screen for one price.
When you sign up, you will be asked for your mailing address so I can send you a little design kit to use in the course.
